This February marks the 57th consecutive recognition of February as the American Heart Month. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, with the number of victims steadily growing year after year. In 2020, nearly 700,000 people – 1 in 5 Americans – died of heart disease.
Heart disease is attributed to a number of unhealthy lifestyle habits, including but not limited to smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, and poor eating. Although people are growing to recognize the concern for maintaining bodily health, many might not know where to begin in order to keep up with a healthier lifestyle.
In many cases, heart disease can be prevented if a healthier way of life is adopted. This includes having a heart-healthy diet that limits sugar, lowers cholesterol and eliminates smoking and excessive drinking, as well as staying active, lowering stress, and getting good amounts of sleep.
